The Highlands, Wyanokie hike is part of the Norvin Green State Forest, a 5,416 acre forest, which is part of the Wyanokie Wilderness Area and is near the Wanaque Reservoir. The summits range from 400 to 1,300 feet in elevation and offer views of the NYC skyline. Aside from hiking, the forest offers cross-country skiing, boating and canoeing, birding, fishing, and hunting.
Mother’s Day was approaching and my girlfriends and I decided it would be great to create an ultimate torture your children day and take the poor children on a hike. However, since I was the only experienced hiker in the group and Sheldon and I had a Sunday to ourselves, we decided to investigate the area ahead of time.
Not nearly as impressive as the Hudson Valley hikes we had under our belt but we were pleasantly surprised that aside from the Palisades, NJ offers some nice hiking trails close to home.
This was not a difficult hike by any means but still got our blood pumping. At the summit, we got to see the NYC skyline, albeit quite far away in comparison to the Palisades.
